Book Clubs in Schools

Book Clubs in Schools: Where Books are Not Just About Reading

  • where we talk about books and the wider world
  • where everyone is included
  • where talking in class is encouraged
  • where you can agree to disagree
  • where reading helps writing

Book Clubs in Schools (BCIS) is a unique initiative to encourage discussion, debate and dialogue through books that children read. BCIS have worked in schools for 6 years. To date over 1,000 school children aged 7-16 have participated in book clubs. They take place in primary and secondary schools in curriculum time. We provide the books, book club mentors, training materials, book club questions and other activities. Book Clubs in Schools was founded by Beth Ginsburg, Alison Palmer and Janine Furness.

To get kids to reengage and enjoy books and to show them that books can open up their minds and introduce new ideas. When was the last time you saw kids sitting around talking about a book? This is what Book Clubs in Schools is all about.

  • social engagement
  • dialogue, debate and discussion
  • a rounded worldview
  • all of it taking place in real time

‘The book clubs are more than just encouraging the children to read – they are about dialogue and conversation – teaching them to enjoy sharing and listening to each other’ – Stephen, volunteer

‘I look forward to coming to book club because I get to meet other people I don’t usually see at school, talking about the book makes it more exciting’ – Ruth aged 10
