GIVE A BOOK: TO A CHILD Give a Book is now working in conjunction with Volunteer Reading Help to give books to children who struggle with literacy. They believe that every child deserves the opportunity to develop to their full potential and literacy is essential to achieving this in both education and in life. For more information, please click here. Each month, a special guest will suggest a book to give. This month Tony Gould, author of half a dozen works of non-fiction, including the award-winning Inside Outsider: The Life and Times of Colin MacInnes, A Summer Plague: Polio and its Survivors and Cures and Curiosities: Inside the Wellcome Library, gives his recommendation. | | Karlsson on the Roof, by Astrid Lindgren "Karlsson on the Roof by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren is a wickedly funny book for children. My son loved it - and I loved reading it to him. Karlsson is a 'very brave, strong, beautiful and reasonably stout hero' with a propellor on his back, so that he can fly 'almost like a little helicopter'. He is also conceited, rude and selfish and gives his child friend Midge a dreadful time. Yet he knows exactly how far he can go without alienating Midge's sympathy. Is he real, or is he a fantasy projection - the 'good' child's alter ego? You must decide for yourself. It's a gem of a book." | | Imagine Midge's delight when, one day, a little man with a propellor on his back appears hovering at the window! It's Karlsson and he lives in a house on the roof. Soon Midge and Karlsson are sharing all sorts of adventures, from tackling thieves and playing tricks to looping the loop and running across the rooftops. Fun and chaos burst from these charming, classic stories. If you would like to give a copy, or copies, of this book, please click the GIVE A BOOK button below.
